An Interview with Rasheed Copeland

What was your first slam experience like?
My first slam experience was very impromptu. My first time witnessing a slam was also my first time competing I’m one. It was against nearly everyone in the DC area who’s inspired me. I wound up getting a time penalty which knocked me from first place to no place. It didn’t even matter though, the feeling was unmatched.
 
What music that inspires you to write poetry?
All kinds!! a few artists in particular include John Mayer, Lupe Fiasco, Stevie Wonder, and The Beatles
 
What is your biggest pet peeve?
obnoxious behavior
 
Who/What inspires you?
Im inspired by any and everything ginuine. i’m somewhat of a sponge.
 
Favorite Book
Lest i be too long winded i’ll name only 5.  The Isis Papers by Dr. Francis Cress Welsing, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, The Miseducation of a Negro by Carter G. Woodson, My Name is Jason, Mine Too by Jason Reynolds & Jason Griffin.
 
Favorite food
Anything Italian!
 
Favorite movie
Paid in full, Black Swan, 500 days of summer, Amelie, Miracle at St. Anna, Do the right thing
 
Favorite place to go in DC
Spit Dat Open Mic, Sankofa intl Baptist Church, The Portrait Gallery (modern art section especially)
 
What do u do besides poetry?
I paint, cook, read, and look nice in suits
 
What was the subject of the last poem you wrote?
My father’s hands
 
What’s the most annoying thing about performing?
Trying to make certain you connect with the audience.
 
What would your friends say about you?
That im hilarious and not as reserved and quiet as i may seem
